Math lessons in English, for Israeli school

For students who learn math in Hebrew but think in English. From grade 1 to the Bagrut at 5 units.

  • Explanations in English, with the Hebrew word for each idea, because the exam is in Hebrew.
  • Practice on real Hebrew Bagrut papers, so the one on exam day looks familiar.
  • The first lesson starts with a short check of exactly where things get stuck.

מצאו את שיעורי נקודות הקיצון של הפונקצייה, וקבעו את סוגן.

Find the coordinates of the function's extreme points, and say whether each is a maximum or a minimum.

The words on the paper are Hebrew. The thinking can be in English.

Who it's for

English-speaking students in the Israeli school system, and their parents.

New olim

Math class moves on while you're still learning Hebrew. You learn the material in English, and the Hebrew math words come with it.

Returning residents

You studied math abroad, and the Israeli program is organized differently. We find what you already know, and fill in the rest for the Bagrut papers.

Parents who want to follow

Your child may be fluent in Hebrew, but you want to know what's going on in math. After each lesson you get a short summary, in English.

How it works

From the first call to the exam.

  1. A short callTen minutes on the phone: the grade, the material, and what's worrying you right now.
  2. First lesson and a checkWe work on real material from class, and on the way find where the gaps are.
  3. A planA short plan up to the next test or the Bagrut, with a goal for each week.
  4. Every weekA summary for parents after each lesson, in English, and a little practice between lessons.

Where the Hebrew fits in

The goal is a student who can sit the paper in Hebrew, or knows which paper to ask for.

In the lesson

English for the thinking, Hebrew for the words on the paper. Each new idea comes with its Hebrew name, like נגזרת, derivative.

Before the exam

Real Bagrut papers in Hebrew, under the real time limit, from the Ministry's archive.

On exam day

Olim who started school in Israel in grade 4 or later can sit math on a Hebrew–English paper. It pays to decide early which one suits you.

About me

I've tutored math privately for two years, and I'm studying for a bachelor's degree in computer science, which is a math-heavy degree.

My English is fluent, and I taught it to myself. I teach in Hebrew and in English, online or in person, from grade 1 to 5-unit Bagrut. The Hebrew site is where my worksheets, tests and puzzles live: שיעורים פרטיים.

Online, or in person

Whichever suits you.

Online

From anywhere, with a shared whiteboard where you write and solve yourself.

In person

In your city and areas. We arrange the place together.

Questions

Are the lessons in English or in Hebrew?
In English, with the Hebrew terms alongside, because the exam papers are in Hebrew. You can switch to Hebrew whenever you like.
Can my child sit the math Bagrut in English?
The Ministry's circular for olim allows a bilingual paper, in Hebrew and English, for students who started school in Israel in grade 4 or later, within 10 years of their aliyah or until age 23. Ask your school which papers are offered in your session. The details are on the page Bagrut math, explained in English.
Do online lessons work as well as lessons in person?
Usually, yes. We use a shared whiteboard, and the student writes and solves. For very young children, a lesson in person is often better.
Which grades and levels do you teach?
From grade 1 to the Bagrut at 3, 4 and 5 units.
What should we have ready for the first lesson?
The notebook, the textbook and the last test, if there is one. That shows quickly where to start.
